A pipe locator works by utilizing the principle of electromagnetic induction, where a transmitter sends out a signal that induces a current in the metallic pipe, creating an electromagnetic field around it which can then be detected by a receiver, allowing the user to pinpoint the pipe's location underground; essentially, it detects the magnetic field generated by the electrical current flowing through the pipe. Key points about pipe locators:
  • Electromagnetic field:When an electrical current flows through a conductor like a metal pipe, it generates a magnetic field around it.
  • Transmitter:A dedicated device sends out a signal at a specific frequency that can be induced into the pipe.
  • Receiver:The receiver picks up the induced signal from the pipe's magnetic field, allowing the user to trace the path of the pipe.
  • Active vs. Passive:Most pipe locators operate in "active mode" where they actively transmit a signal into the pipe, but some can also detect a weak natural signal from a live electrical cable in "passive mode".
How to use a pipe locator:
  • Attach transmitter: Clamp the transmitter onto the exposed section of the pipe.
  • Scan the area: Move the receiver over the ground, listening for the signal strength to identify the pipe's location.
  • Mark the path: Mark the ground where the signal is strongest to trace the pipe's route.
